It was whilst studying for an English degree at UEA in the early 80's that Chris came across Yoga, Kempo (a martial art), Cheirology (handreading) and Meditation. Following these trainings Chris developed a deep interest in natural healing which resonated with his childhood in the country. On graduating he worked for a year on a 50 acre organic farm in Norfolk. Over the next 14 years living in Norwich he dedicated his time to training in and teaching the above arts within the framework of Shingon (Chen Yen) Buddhism. He further completed a City and Guilds in Carpentry and Joinery and qualified as a Shiatsu practicioner, appreciating the challenge of combining the practical and the philosophical.
He moved to London to take a degree in Osteopathy, deepening his understanding of Western medical models. He experienced working at the Osteopathic Centre for Children in Harley Street and currently practices in North London and Brighton. He decided to focus his own training on Yoga and Meditation and has now been teaching yoga for over 20 years being qualified as an Intermediate level Iyengar teacher.
For five years Chris worked full time as a Hand Reader and had a stall on Camden Market. He has been featured by Hester Lacey in the Guardian. He continues to read hands privately, offering insights into individuals elemental make up and how best to harmonise the four main areas of life (home, relationships, work and ideology) with one's constitution to create a more balanced and fullfilling life.
Recently Chris has had articles published in The Times, The Telegraph,and Climber Magazine where he ran a four month feature on 'Yoga and Climbing'. His travels have taken him to study Thai massage in Thailand, Yoga in India and he has experienced training in various Buddhist Monasteries. He regularily runs sweat lodges in his woods in Sussex and is in the process of establishing a Mountain Yoga retreat centre with his brother in cental Portugal near Tomar. He appreciates a simple, realistic approach to life, closely connected to nature.
Chris's varied path has meant that he has come into contact with a wide range of people from all walks of life. As such he has observed that patterns of ill health often originate when the natural elements (which make up our individual constitution) are blocked and not allowed to freely express themselves in a creative way. Too often we fall victim to the pressures and constraints of our so called 'civilised' culture. We develop false personnas to face the outer world which are often like masks hidding those aspects of our nature (our hidden shadows) which do not fit in with society's norms, both social and financial. In a sense we then experience the disatisfaction and unhappiness of leading false lives in the wrong job, the wrong relationship and the wrong place. By first appreciating who we are using the Five Elements we can then start the process of becoming real people and then start to enjoy genuine happiness, health and fullfillment as we start to base our decision making on an awareness of who we really are.
